My friend Denise is one of my crunchy mama pals that I can always count on for breastfeeding advice, organic food recipes, and cloth diapering savvy.  Where she really excels, however, is with babywearing support.  She’s actually a consultant for mamas who are looking to start babywearing, check their current carries, or just find out what the heck babywearing is.

If you’re in that last category, fear not (and check out her website here for a quick overview).  I was just like you before I had Cora, and even now there’s a lot I don’t know.  So I asked Denise if she would be willing to come over for an afternoon way back when I was still pregnant so I could start wrapping my mind around the challenge of wearing an infant again.

Note that is not a real baby. 🙂 During our consultation, Denise showed me lots of different carriers in a thousand different patterns and colors.  We tried different ones on for size, and she showed me the proper fit with the prop baby that even came with a slightly creepy smile on its face.  It’s one thing to watch a YouTube video of how to use your sling or wrap, but to have someone who knows what they’re doing actually there, helping out and showing your where there’s just a little too much slack is so helpful.

Cora even got in on the babywearing action! Denise showed her how to carry her puppy, and I think my little girl’s maternal instincts flew off the charts.  That’s the best part about wearing your baby to me.  You feel so close to them, so protective, and yet you’re still free to move about and get things done.  It’s also a million times easier to wear your baby when you’re in a crowded event, rather than try to push a bulky stroller around.  I can remember when Cora was younger wearing her in my wrap was sometimes the only way she would sleep, and then I could do a load of dishes while she took a nap.  Perfection for a new mom!

My sister got this Maya ring sling for me for Christmas, so I asked Denise if she could help me figure out how to wear it specifically during our consult.  She was totally fine with that, but if you don’t have anything yet she also sells her wraps for excellent prices.  Be careful though, once you start feeling the fabrics and trying the different fits it’s easy to become addicted!  Denise and I are having a follow up appointment in just a few weeks to see how I’m doing wearing Issa now that she’s here, and I can’t wait to a) see her and b) wear all the babies! 🙂
