In all seriousness though, hydrating your skin has become the latest rage in skincare, as well as all things Asian beauty. Both are combined with SK-II, a line championed by Cate Blanchett with roots in Japan. Although their products are based on science, it was a chance discovery at a sake brewery that led to their breakthrough in ageless skin. Pitera is a single yeast strain used in the making of sake that was in constant contact with the brewers’ hands during the fermentation process. The scientists from SK-II noticed that even though their faces aged normally, the workers’ hands remained soft and youthful. By isolating this key ingredient and incorporating it into their products, SK-II has created an effective product that has the science to back it up.
I had the chance to experience the second half of SK-II’s unique approach with their staff at Neiman Marcus. Instead of just sending you home with a product that may or may not work for you, they take the time to perform a (complimentary) full analysis of your skin, poring over every detail and creating a database that you can go back and reference after using their products for a period of time. This way if it’s not working, you’ll know it. And you can trust that SK-II believes in their products so much they’re willing to prove it to you.
My results were perhaps a little disturbing for a 27-year-old, but once you factored in motherhood, my terrible (nonexistent) skincare routine, and my ridiculous need to go tanning back in college, it made sense. SK-II will even go so far as to tell you your skin’s real age, but I’m going to keep my number a secret. 🙂 Armed with all this data, they can now recommend products that make sense for your specific needs. For me, it was all about hydration, brightening, and evening tone.
