Okay, so I have a bit of a Real Housewives obsession that really came out of the blue. I never watched any of the franchises until Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, in which I fell in love with all the drama, expensive handbags and their luscious, plump lips. Of course, they are all terribly overdone with the plastic surgery and the fillers and the Botox, but it got me wondering about the possibilities of a little plumping action, myself. I have a full bottom lip, but a top lip that sometimes looks puny in comparison.
After much research and a trip to Ulta, I decided to purchase a lip plumper– Lip Injection, by Too Faced.
The lip plumper is really a gloss that has capsaicin as it’s active ingredient. Capsaicin is the chemical found in hot peppers that produces the burning sensation in your hot wings and barbecue. Apparently, when used on the external tissues of the body, it can plump and enlarge the skin. It also creates a lovely rosy color. I thought I’d include some rudimentary before and after photos. My camera isn’t the best for close ups, but you can definitely tell that, especially in my upper lip, there has been some enlargement. The results are far more subtle than any real injector, which I why I like them.

The few times I’ve used this gloss I’ve had results, but of varying degrees. I think that just in the same way that sometimes hot peppers feel like they’re going to kill you slowly and other times feel hardly like a challenge, sometimes this plumper will be more effective than others.
If you’re interested in purchasing, let me give you a few tips. While this creates a lovely glossy effect, be sure to wipe it off after the recommended 5 minutes. When I left mine on for the afternoon, my lips felt slightly burnt. Also, be very meticulous in your application of the plumper on your lips. I accidentally wiped it across my face once and had a lovely, raised red streak on my cheek for about 20 minutes afterwards.
