Remember Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl?  Skinny, loveable, always torn between two men?  Ok, the latter part isn’t me, but one summer while eating a meal in an Italian cafe, I had two older gentlemen describe me as the lovely lady of Popeye’s dreams.  Granted it was in Italian, but we got the gist.  Now, while I will take that as a compliment due to her sunny disposition, Olive Oyl is not necessarily known for her hair.  It’s always pulled back in a tight black bun, almost as if she’s a little embarassed by it.  Heaven forbid Popeye stop loving her due to that haystack she calls a head of hair!  Exhibit A below:  happy, but keeping that hair under wraps.

Ironically, my hair has been in pretty bad shape lately as well.  Remember last week I was complaining about my dried out, miserable hair?  Traveling, hotel water, and moving stress all rolled into one have led to a nasty little haystack of my own.  My solution was to chop it all off as soon as I can find my way into a salon, but K saved the day with a DIY remedy I just had to share with you all.  And, what, you ask, are the magic ingredients?  Do you have a pen and paper ready?  Here it is…just OLIVE OIL!  Our namesake is our savior, and this technique could not be any easier.  I’m not sure if the type of olive oil makes a difference, but I used Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  Thanks to K for the directions, I left them just how she sent them to me.

  1. Pour the olive oil into your hands and rub it between your palms to warm it up and diffuse it across space.
  2. Apply it directly to the the hair from the crown to the ends, avoiding the roots.
  3. Keep adding until it’s just barely coated, you don’t want it to be soaked with oil.
  4. Sleep with your hair up, and put a towel on your pillow to prevent staining.
  5. Wash your hair with shampoo the next morning, but don’t put water on your hair first. You need to wash the oil out first with the shampoo on the areas where you put it on your head.
  6. Then rewash from the roots to tips with water and shampoo.

My hair absolutely loved this treatment, although I wish I would have put more on my ends.  Overall though, my hair is more supple, softer, and has it’s moisture back.  The best part is, there’s no mixing, measuring, or counting, you just have to have a little olive oil in the pantry.  Try it out and let us know what you think!

XO,

Aquila
