Dear Issa,

Today you are two months old! You’re already quite a bit chunkier than you were when these photos were taken a few weeks ago, and I’d guess you probably weigh close to thirteen pounds now.   We’ll find out for sure when we take you to your pediatrician appointment on Monday, which is also when you’re going to get your first shots.  I’m sure you’ll be a trooper like your big sister has always been, but I will probably shed embarrassing amounts of tears for you.

At two months into this thing called life, I am continually amazed how easygoing and calm you are.  It’s as if you’ve already got this whole shebang figured out, you’re just waiting for us to catch up.  It’s been a huge blessing to know we can count on you to be stress-free, because your big sister is suffering from an affliction called being a “threenager” and can make the house feel like a looney bin at times.  She loves you to death though, and she’s never once complained about helping out as the big sister.

You’re pretty great at holding your head up, and looking around with these big ‘ol blue eyes that have everyone puzzled as to where they came from.  Apparently there’s some blue eyes on your dad’s side, and there’s a couple hazels on my side, but your dad and I are both brown as can be so we’ll see if yours stick around.  Hopefully you’ll still claim us as your parents if they do.  Speaking of which, we’ve paired your photos next to Cora’s a few times and I’m still trying to figure out if you look alike at all.  Some days I think you’re the spitting image of her, and others I think you’re going to look completely different.  Your temperaments are already so different, so maybe your outward appearance will be as well.

It’s funny, when I was pregnant with you I think I just assumed I was going to give birth to Cora version 2.  I guess from my own family’s experiences I should have known siblings can come from the same mom and same dad and yet be complete opposites of each other.  My siblings and I always had a few common threads that wove us together though, and I hope the same for you and Cora.

Right this second you’re sleeping next to me at my desk, and it’s so much fun to watch your little twitches as you dream.  In some ways I hope you always stay this little, and in some ways I can’t wait for you to grow up and start talking my ear off like your big sister.  Either way I’m just savoring these moments with you, from your sunshiney smiles every morning to your sleepy cuddles in the evening.  I love you, my little one, always and forever.

XO,

A
