Since this is where I’m pretty much planning on existing for the next few weeks after baby arrives, I thought giving you all a virtual tour of our master bedroom decor might be fun.  I’m not an interior designer, but I know what I like and I love to pick out pieces that create meaning and happiness for me in our living spaces.  Orlando and I both prefer a modern, clean, minimalist style, which varies significantly from the Hill Country rustic look most of our fellow Texans gravitate towards.  Case in point: here’s a (poorly lit) before photo with the previous owners’ furniture during one of our last tours of the house before moving in.

Beige, beige, and more beige with just a touch of dark brown thrown in to really mix things up. 🙂 I would love to repaint the entire house with gray walls and white ceilings, but when we started to look at decorating the master bedroom that just felt overwhelming.  Hence, we met halfway and went with a crisp sky blue on the walls that was simultaneously soothing and helped ease the builder beige blues until we can remedy that down the road.

Pardon the wrinkly bed sheets, but ironing my comforter isn’t quite my top priority at the moment.  I wanted to do something different with the wall behind our bed, and wallpaper started calling my name early on in the process.  We looked through countless books and swatches before deciding on this one, and I wish you could see it’s texture better.  Perhaps the second photo gives you a clearer idea.

Now for perhaps my favorite spot in the whole room, if not house.  This little reading nook is perfect for lounging with a cup of tea on a lazy Saturday morning, or for throwing dirty clothes if you’re Orlando. 🙂 Either way, I have a feeling as the kids grow and can play independently this will be my little oasis for some peace and quiet.  And the big bay windows let in so much light it can’t help but brighten your mood.

Our bedside tables actually belonged to my Uncle way back in the day, and when he passed away my father brought them to Indiana from California.  Then as we were newlyweds and about to head to Texas, I raided my parent’s attic and decided they should be ours.  I love that they coordinate with our bed frame but not in an matchy-matchy way.   And although tablescapes aren’t my forte, each of these photos, jewelry dish, and sculpture has special meaning for us.  If you can’t read it, the dish says, “I wake up expecting things.”  Indeed. 🙂

Side note: remember when I met Rebecca Minkoff? I received this notebook as a gift from Neiman Marcus, and had her sign it at the event.  She and I had chatted briefly about the transition from one baby to two, and so her inscription on the inside reads:

“Enjoy the ride of motherhood! X 2

XO,

RM”

I thought that made it the perfect journal to use for my Birthing from Within studies, and so I’ve been writing to baby girl in it and tracking my feelings towards birth and delivery.  So fun!

Frenchie in her favorite spot on the bed.  She didn’t get why I kept shooing her off for photos, so eventually I just gave in.  Isn’t it funny how our pets are our babies before we have babies? And then they get moved down the totem pole so quickly after little ones arrive?  Bless her heart, Frenchie has been the best with all the changes she’s seen in our family, so she at least gets to maintain her comfy place at the foot of the bed.

It’s rather difficult to see, but my best mama friends made me a birth banner to have on display while I’m in labor and I can’t stop tearing up when I look at it.  They each wrote motivational sayings and encouraging words on the brightly colored flags to help me through each pain, each contraction.  I know it will mean so much to me in those difficult hours, and in the months to come as I’m finding the strength to parent two little ones.  If you are blessed enough to find amazing mommy friends like me, hold on to them for dear life.  It’s moments like these where you realize how much you need them in your world.

One last shot of a clean, crisp bedroom before baby arrives and I can’t find the energy to throw a pillow, much less make a bed.  See that bassinet on the left? My family got us a HALO Bassinest at our baby shower and I couldn’t be more thrilled to try it out once baby arrives.  It swivels 360 degrees, and you can lower the sidebar to slip baby in and out without disturbing them.  Since the baby’s nursery is upstairs I know we won’t be making that transition for at least a few months while we get on a routine.  Hopefully the bassinest will give us some space to sleep while keeping baby close.  Yay for baby gear, now let’s bring that baby into the world!
