When I first started this tiny little blog, we would watch livestream recordings of the big shows in New York and patch together a report of the designer’s work using photos from our favorite fashion websites. This year, for the first time in Haute in Texas history, we were actually AT the shows, covering the runway live, and it was such a dream come true! My sister Hadley served as our official #NYFW correspondent, and if you were following on Snapchat you got to see the whole thing! Today’s she giving us her personal perspective on the fashion and the faux pas. Enjoy!

Hi guys! I’m Hadley Orr, Aquila’s sister (the crazy one), and as many of you probably saw on Monday, I took over my sister’s Snapchat to cover my experience at New York Fashion Week. Now, I am a full time grad student and work 5 jobs, so I couldn’t stay for the whole week, but I really hope you enjoyed that little slice of heaven.

Being in the epicenter of the fashion world was something like a dream. I actually barely got there on time because I was hiking all that morning in northern Connecticut. So, I showed up 20 minutes late to the runway show called “Ones to Watch.” It all featured up and coming designers and a small part of the show was from the New York School of Design students. No, I was not sitting next to Anna Wintour, but I do think it is important to take a look at what new designers are doing, those who are probably the hungriest to achieve and are clawing their way to the top. I consider it to be the ultimate prediction for future fashion, to see the originality and creativity from people trying to get their huge break.

In the actual show, I saw very different styles depending on the designer. From the line “Just in Case,” there were many colors, especially an array of reds, with a plethora of pattern mixing. As far as dresses goes, I saw so many daring looks with extreme high slits that exposed the entire side of the body with some horizontal slips of fabric to connect the two sides. It was a modern take on the slip dress, with a little bit of edge mixed in.

After the show, I squeezed in with other photographers to snap some photos of the red carpet. This was one of my favorite points because I was able to interview some models and designers, just getting to know them. One designer said her absolute favorite part about fashion week was “the energy, people having fun and finally being able to finish huge projects where they really stretch the bounds of fashion.”

After interviewing and getting to know people in the industry much better, plus swapping lots of Instagrams, I hit the streets to do some photography, the majority of the time hanging at Skylight at Moynihan Station (360 W 33rd St). It was honestly a photographer’s dream having so many iconic-looking figures all in one place, beautiful people who weren’t afraid to push the limits about what you should wear. My absolute favorite was the woman below who wore open leg trousers.

It was hard to miss the denim trend flying past me as people entered and left the exclusive venue. One of my absolute favorite expressions of individual style was a dapper gentleman rocking a thick choker with matching frames on his glasses. Surprisingly, everyone outside, including all the photographers, were very nice and it was wonderful to meet other photographers. Walking up to the venue, I actually had about 8-10 photographers start photographing me, if only because I was dressed up, tall, and skinny. I starting laughing and yelled that I wasn’t a model, but one of the sweet guys, who I got to know better later, lifted his head from his camera and said, “Still pretty though.” 🙂 I’m so glad I went and thankful for all of the amazing people I met. Fashion isn’t just for the elite, it can provide inspiration everywhere you look if you let it!
