Fashion Week San Antonio

We’re in the thick of Fashion Week San Antonio right now, so I am low on sleep, running on style adrenaline, and my feet are killing me.  But I wanted to check in to let you all know how it’s going, what you may have missed, and how you can still be a part of this fabulous week!

1. The showspace.

Museo Alameda (or whatever Texas A&M has attempted to rename it) is the perfect blank slate for Fashion Week.  Tony and the team did a great job putting together the space for Fashion Week and creating wall art, shoe selfie stations, etc. to make it an experience, not just a runway.

2. Falling down the stairs.

Yup, I totally bit it.  I was headed down just fine in my heels and fancy dress, when someone had to stop to talk to me.  I paused, took just a moment to chat, and then forgot that I still had one more step to go before the landing.  So down I went, all the way to the ground, nice and slow motion for the entire fashion community of San Antonio to see.  Cue everyone freaking out because the one pregnant lady in the entire building just wiped out.  Don’t worry, I’m fine, baby has been moving and letting me know she’s just dandy as well, and I gave my midwife a quick text to let her know.  I’m sure she would appreciate it if I resorted to flats for the rest of Fashion Week, but I think I’ll just hold on to the railings from here on out.  Or take the elevator. 🙂

3. The masquerade ball.

Y’all.  The Tobin Center is GORGEOUS.  Seriously how lucky are we to have such a stunning venue in our city?  The Dia de los Muertos masquerade ball was a total blast, with music pumping and masks galore.  Sometimes throwing a themed costume party can be a bit of a risk, but everyone showed up dressed to the nines and ready to have a great time.  Love it when that happens!

4. Samantha’s show.

Probably the most highly anticipated show of the week, Samantha Plasencia truly rocked her moment in the spotlight and made the city proud.  Her signature black and white dominated the sportswear looks, with pops of cobalt to highlight the simple but clean lines.  Menswear also had its moment, with draped black trousers and graphic prints.  Her time on Project Runway may be over, but Sam is still San Antonio’s fashion darling, and the crowd loved her for it.

5. A Fashion Education.

This one is less of a top 5 and more of a rant, but it must be said.  I realize San Antonio’s community is not used to runway shows and fashion etiquette like perhaps New York or Paris may be, but we all need to come to terms with the fact that shows NEVER start on time.  Don’t show up to the event 30 minutes early, show up when the doors are set to open and expect to enjoy yourself mingling about until it’s time to be seated.  If you can’t make it in your heels on your feet for that long, wear flats or suck it up.  There are 5,385 things going on backstage that all have to be in perfect order before the lights can dim and the show can begin.  Trust me, it’s better to view a fully prepared show in quick succession than start before the designer is ready and endure awkward pauses between models for a disjointed presentation.  For the rest of Fashion Week let’s all just agree to take a deep breath, enjoy the moment, and stop looking at the clock!  If it happens in New York, Paris, and Milan, you can expect it will also take time to prepare a show in San Antonio as well.
