Today’s guest blog is from my friend Megan, who blogs at Pistol Wears on her toddler’s distinct fashion sense.  We both share an affinity for natural parenting and raising independent little girls, so I was interested to hear her philosophy on how she dresses her daughter Pistol each day.  Take a peek in to her journey from hopeful boy mom to balancing the princess pink desires of a 3-year-old and her own desire to buck tradition:

PistolWears_GoSpursGoI can remember my initial thought when it was revealed the bump was indeed a growing a girl. If you’re familiar with the gender reveal quote from Knocked Up, it was along those lines. Joking, of course. I knew it would be a girl, after all, I was eager for a boy. Not sure why, since I’m a dresses-only kind of person. After 20ish weeks of skimming the boy racks at local shops and dreaming up a nursery full of motorcycles and tattoo art, I was suddenly launched into a world full of pink, princesses and ponies.

And so grew my affinity with go against the grain parenting…

I thought, my little can wear “boy” clothes and I can shop across the aisle. Who’s to say what works and what doesn’t. All I knew is that I wanted to stay as far away from smocking as possible, unless it was being used in ironic format.

PistolWears_BlueShirtLong before Pistol Wears was born – my toddler fashion blog built around my little one’s style – my beautiful 8lb 9oz 22inches tall princess came into the world. Little did I know that my years of dressing her in whatever (boy) clothes I wanted would be minimal, and by the age of 3 she would make verbal clothing requests so clear I could no longer ignore them.

//me: what do you want to wear today?
//Pistol: mmm, princess dress.
//me: which one?
//Pistol: ‘punzel
And there you have it. As my beautiful offspring sprung into the world, her fashion sense soon did follow. I guess my fashion disappointment post-gender reveal was a bit more neutral now.
