Do you still subscribe to the old adage that blue and black should never be worn together? I used to adhere pretty religiously to that fashion restriction all throughout high school and most of college.  It wasn’t until I started seeing it on runways and on the streets that I finally dared to wear the two colors together.   Apparently my aversion has completely vanished at this point, because when Modcloth asked me to pick a summer dress and create a nail design based on the look, I was immediately drawn to the Guest Who? Dress that you can check out below:

I loved the feminine details, open back, and punchy color.  My style also tends to lean towards the formal, and I thought this dress would be perfect for a summer date night or concert.  The next step was attempting to design nail art inspired by my chosen dress.  I am NOT skilled nor savvy when it comes to nail design, so I wanted something that even a novice like me could attempt.  Here was what I decided on:

I picked up OPI’s “Teal the Cows Come Home” and The New Black Mesh and Lace nail kit from Ulta.  Paired with my usual favorite nail file, Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Nail Hardener, and Sally Hansen Mega Shine Top Coat, I was ready to rock.  Here are the step-by-step instructions based on my experience with the nail decals:

  1.  Begin by shaping your nails and prepping your cuticles as you normally would.
  2. Apply nail hardener as base coat.
  3. Apply two coats of OPI color and allow to COMPLETELY dry.  I attempted to apply a nail decal on my first thumb without letting the polish dry entirely and it completely ruined the color underneath.
  4. Select the nail decal that best suits your nail size, peel, and trim to fit with scissors if need be.
  5. Once the decal is pressed firmly to the nail, cut down excess and file nails to remove the final remainder.
  6. Once all decals are applied, finish with a top coat to seal the nails and add shine.
  7. DONE!

Above you can see the final result! What do you think? The blue ended up being a bit brighter than the Modcloth dress, but I think it makes the black lace details pop more than a true blue color would have.  Even for a nail novice like me it wasn’t too terrible to have to apply the decals, and of course OPI never disappoints.  Thanks to Modcloth for providing the inspiration!
