It should be said that I am not a crafty person.  I sewed a pillow in kindergarten and have not picked up a needle and thread since.  That is, until this Saturday, when I went to a workshop hosted by Art by the Yard.  Owner Tania Garza held my amateur sewer hand and taught me how to make my own hair accessories out of fabric!  Yes, me!  The girl who doesn’t even know how to darn a sock!  Behold my creations:

Yup, that’s a zipper.  This one was just a matter of gluing one half of a zipper and the fabric attached to a small piece of muslin.  By slowly twisting the zipper as I glued it to the base, I ended up with this flower-esque piece.  Due to drying issues, this was the only piece I was able to finish, but I love it!  The turquoise bead was a final addition, and it really completes the look, don’t you think?

This baby, I actually sewed into being!  I started with a two-inch strip of fabric, and I ran a running stitch through the bottom to gather it into the flower shape.  Then I finished off the flower by stitching up the sides and closing off the bottom (not without losing my needle and thread multiple times of course).  Eventually I would want to pin or glue it down so it would lay flat against my head, and then I’ll have to attach a pin to the back.  The directions may sound complicated, but this flower probably took me all of thirty minutes, and that’s with my ridiculously terrible sewing skills.

This is another piece of muslin fabric that I simply painted during the workshop.  It still needs a clip glued to the back to be wearable, but I could also attach it to a headband, hair band, or barrette.  I can’t even remember the last time I sat down and painted something, and I found it extremely relaxing.  Mixing the purple and blue colors gave this a sort of tie-die appearance, which I think is perfect for this size.

Do you guys make your own hair accessories?  Have you ever thought about learning to sew, or am I the only one who has no skills whatsoever? If you’re interested in attending a workshop hosted by Tania, be sure to like them on Facebook here!
