Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s time to prepare your closets. Winter is coming.

I know it seems like a long way off with the heat in the hundreds today, but, never the less, it IS coming. I’m not the type that will buy up a bunch of every trend, and nor should you, really. Let’s get real, times are tough, Gucci is expensive and vacations are more fun. However, investing in just a few select trends can really revamp your wardrobe. Over the next few week’s, I’ll be discussing ways to wear some upcoming trends with minimal impact on your budget.

WAYS TO INCORPORATE TEXTURE

We saw lots of experimentation with texture this past season at New York Fashion Week. Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang all mixed fabrics to create a ridiculously textured, rich look.

Donna Karan

Furs, sequins, knots, cashmeres, silks, satins, chiffons, herringbones, wools, charmeuse, viscose, crochet, feathers– familiarize yourself with these terms and you’ll never be short of textures to choose from.

Texture is fairly easy to achieve in the coldest months (layers, layers layers), but it’s the summer-to-autumn transition time where you may struggle the most to wear texture. Too many layers and you’ll quickly become too hot. Too few, and you’re chilly at night.

Show some restraint with your layers and reach the textured look through two or three opposing fabrics– think chunky knit cardigans over a loose and flowy bohemian ruffled tank. Pair a rich knotted crochet poncho over a crinkle gauze top, with denim peg pants and a rich leather ankle bootie. It may not seem like these textures will make an impact, but people will notice the justaposition.

Use the 2 and 1 rule or the 3 and 2 rule to offer some restraint and resistance to your textured outfits. Pick two or three opposing fabrics. See that Donna Karan photo above? She mixes sequins, fur and wool to create the outfit. She adds two textured accessories to complete the look- the suede gloves and the semi-sheer hosiery. See? 3 and 2.

That’s Alexander Wang’s beautiful poncho above. He’s following the 2 and 1 rule in very simple terms. His outfit consists of silk and an unknown feathery substance (cut me some slack, I’m going by photos) with his one texture accessory. Can you spot it? It’s just a hint of silver at the wrist, that echoes the silver in the shoe.

To really amp it up a notch, wear a cashmere turtleneck, with a dangly feather necklace and satin pants, as I’ve styled below. The bag matches the tone of the outfit without competing with the textures. The shoes add a bit of extra oomph with their texture, but it doesn’t compete with everything else because the leather is in the same tone, as well.

XO,
K
